Kevin Pietersen’s culture-clash

Matthew Engel writes a great article on why Kevin Pietersen could find it harder than he would like to admit to “fit in” in England. There are obvious problems associated with this, not least the fact he’s now an international sportsman with the personality to match. But Engel points out examples, too, in Smith and Lamb who – he says – were never truly accepted as Englishmen.

This is a hornet’s nest, but a fascinating one. I don’t imagine Pietersen feels English, not for a second. He’s making the most of his chances of playing international cricket – to do that, he has decided England offer him the greater possibilities. So, I don’t begrudge him, but if Flintoff and Pietersen bat together this summer, I know who will get the biggest cheer on reaching a hundred…
