Eng v SA T4 D1 notes

Solid start by England seems to be the consensus, although losing Strauss, Thorpe and Key were big blows. Hoggard and Vaughan will resume tomorrow, with the captain looking as out of form as is possible. I don’t think I’ve seen Vaughan look this bad – which in a sense is a relief, as he can only improve from now on! Those lazy, crazy days of his assault on the Aussies seem but a distant memory. Some Australian commentators were saying at the time that they hadn’t seen such an elegant player for decades. Anyway – even if he can find a tenth of that form England will be happy.

Good fightback from SA – and a really good day’s cricket overall. On “sessions-won”, it’s probably 2-1 to England although SA only just squeezed out a win right at the end.
