Australia’s batting lineup

Scott’s just posted a piece (“I before E except after C” – I have to keep reminding myself of that. But piece just looks wrong) on Australia’s batters, and their averages. Interesting debate as to why they’re so good; are they so good; and attempt to look back in history to compare. My comments on it were…

Personally I can’t help feeling that bowling standards have declined, even in the last decade. Since Ambrose and Walsh retired, only Australia has had a class attack – and perhaps also when Pollock and Donald were in their prime. So, my logic says (rightly or wrongly) – why *shouldn’t* the Aussie team have such brilliant batting stats? The bowlers they face are shite in comparison to their own. Which isn’t to say they are not all fine, fine players – they are! – but the decline of world bowling standards have contributed to their stats, I reckon.
